The mobile phone industry has invested heavily in providing consumers with mobile devices that they can use anytime, anywhere for an ever increasing range of functions.

We now have ...

• Devices: An ever increasingly sophisticated range of mobile phones including Blackberries and iPhones support a range of communication and online and offline functions (cameras, games, mp3 players, etc).
• Web technologies: Mobile browsers and network gateways that adapt regular web pages for mobile devices
• Mobile content: Vendors, suppliers and product sites working with web designers to provide complimentary PC and mobile web experiences.
• Networks: GSM networks are operational in 219 countries around the globe¹, and the faster 3G networks are available to 87% of the UK population.²

And it's (sort of) working ...

• Over 3½ billion mobile phones in use around the world.³
• In the UK the average consumer owns 1.8 mobile phones (this looks set to increase to 2 per person during 2009).⁴
• According to the MDA figures there were over 16 miilion unique visitors in the UK accessing the Internet from their mobile phone during May 2008.⁵
• Almost three-quarters of mobile users (72 per cent) have internet capabilities on their mobile.⁶
• The number of users accessing the internet via a mobile phone is now growing x8 times faster than PC based internet access.⁷

However ...

• Cost is one of most common reasons why people don't use the Internet on the mobile phone.
• It is currently estimated that 7 out of 10 mobile phone users do not know how much they are charged for mobile data services.⁸
• Of those that do have a view on how much they're charged, over 30% think this is too high.⁹
